Spring Break 2013 Rowing Camp – Oklahoma City
March 19th-23th, 2013
What is the spring break rowing camp?
The spring break rowing camp will be held in Oklahoma City this year and involves 5 days of intensive training in preparation for the Central District Region Youth Rowing Championships held in OKC.
When is the trip?
We depart in the early morning of Tuesday, March 19th and arrive in Oklahoma City for a 5-day camp and return back to Tulsa on Saturday, March 23th by the evening – (see schedule at the end of document for more information).
Why is the trip important?
The trip is an important part of training and preparation for Central Districts, the National Championship Regatta and the UK Trip. Athletes that are looking to prepare themselves for the challenges of these events and want to maximize their performance should attend this trip. Athletes make huge gains in terms of technique and physical development by focusing completely on rowing without outside distraction. In addition, athletes also get to know each other better and enjoy each others company creating a strong bond between team members.
What is the deadline for committing to the trip?
We would like to know if you would like to make a commitment to the trip by January 31st, 2013
Please contact Coach Bergenroth at coachb@tulsarowing.org.
What is the cost of the trip?
Last year’s trip cost $450 and the cost this year will be around this and will ultimately depend on the number of athletes attending the camp. The cost includes room and breakfast at the local downtown Hampton Inn, dock fees, a team bowling night and some of the specialized activities provided by OKC Riversport (see next section). Athletes will need to bring extra money for lunch and dinner meals.
Why Oklahoma City as the training environment?
The river and facilities in Oklahoma City are first-rate and we also can save money on travel expenses. OKC Riversport has been working hard to improve their offerings for teams making Oklahoma City their destination for spring break training.
These include:
* Oklahoma River morning and afternoon practice sessions (Chesapeake Boathouse or Exchange
Boathouse options)
* Technique sessions in the Devon Boathouse dynamic rowing tank – the world’s first with moving rowing
stations – plus video, race simulation
* High altitude training (12,000 ft) on ergs in the Devon Boathouse hypoxic chamber
* Strength training with HPC Strength & Conditioning Coach Cam Brown
* Lunch Q&A with Olympic gold medalist Bryan Volpenhein
* High Performance workout for your team designed by USRowing Coach John Parker
* Team building exercises
* BioRow and Dart Fish analysis available
While there may not be time and money to do all of these activities, Oklahoma City provides a cost effective solution and will create an ideal training environment for our athletes looking to perform at the next level.
Will there be any competitions or scrimmages during the camp?
We will be scrimmaging the OKC juniors on the last day of the camp on Saturday morning.
What does a typical day at the camp involve?
Athletes participating in the trip will row 25-30km a day during two practices. Typically, the morning practice is focused on improving physically and mentally. The afternoon practice is more technically focused. In addition to these two on the water practices, there is time for team building activities. These include activities that are more formal and social activities such as bowling and going to see a movie.
