Who & What?
The Tulsa Youth Rowing Association (TYRA) is offering a free two-week Basic Training session open to all 7th through 12th-grade student-athletes. Activities include learning how to row in rowing shells, handling equipment, river safety, land training, and technical instruction. No experience is required as this is an introductory course for beginners. Athletes wanting to join the competitive team in the fall must complete one of the following: a summer camp, a basic training course, or a gROWth session. Basic Training is not required to join the recreational gROWth program; however, it is highly encouraged.
Where & When?
Basic training is held at the TU Boathouse in Catoosa or at the TRC boathouse in Tulsa (depending on weather conditions), August 8th – August 13th (Mon-Sat). Weekday sessions will run from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
How Much?
The one-week Basic Training fee is free and includes one official TYRA team shirt. Participants are also eligible to join the recreational “gROWth” program ($400 per semester) if they cannot commit to the more rigorous competitive team schedule. Please email Head Coach Tino Angelini (valentinoanglelini18@okrowing.com) for specific questions about Basic Training, the gROWth program, or the TYRA competitive team.
What Else?
Please read the 2022 Fall Basic Training Informational Packet (located under “Downloadable Forms”) before the first practice. Required additional forms, practice schedule, practice locations and directions, rules, and helpful advice (what to wear and bring) are all included in the Informational Packet. All participants must complete the online US Rowing Waiver (see instructions in the Informational Packet)
A swim test will be required to attend basic training. If you need to take a swim test, please go to the 17th and Lewis YWCA (1910 S. Lewis Ave #200, Tulsa, OK, 74104). The number for this location is 918.749.2519. We encourage you to call ahead and schedule an appointment.
All participants must bring a full water bottle to stay properly hydrated. Athletic shoes and clothing are required for each day. Long and baggy shorts are not recommended as they may get caught in equipment gear.
