On March 19th, the Tulsa Youth Rowing Association traveled to Oklahoma City to compete in a competitive scrimmage. The crews raced over a 2000m distance against some of the top programs in the region which included Dallas, Hockaday, and OKC Juniors, St. Louis among other programs.

Our crews represented Tulsa well. Notable finishes included Max Tucker and Sam Derricot in the Men’s Under 19 2x. The TYRA girls Under-17 four with coxswain placed fourth  (U17/novice 4+ was Emory Oakes (Lincoln Christian), Teagan Castleberry (Epic Charter School), Taylor Korb (Owasso Public Schools) Julia Krutz (Lincoln Christian), coxswain was Tino Angelini placed 4th with one of the women’s U-17 doubles placing 2nd (Julia Krutz and Emory Oakes).

“The race was enjoyable since the wind cleared up near the end for a great sprint.  We really enjoyed racing with the other crews in our event and getting to represent TYRA on a river full of boats from Texas (like St. Mark’s, Woodlands), OKC, and Northwest Arkansas,” said Booker T. Washington Senior Max Tucker.

“Overall, we had a great day at the OKC scrimmage,” said Head Coach Tino Angelini.  Everything went very smoothly, and the kids were excited to race which is always nice!  I even found myself slightly out of my comfort zone coxing one of our 4+’s down the river, but I think everyone had fun.  Our Men’s U19 2x represented TYRA well on the river, finishing 1st in their event, and the ladies did really well too; our Women’s U17 4+ battled hard to secure 4th position (passing boats from St. Louis and Dallas United Club), and one of our Women’s U17 2x’s finished in 2nd place.  All-in, it was a great weekend for TYRA, and we are taking everything we learned from the scrimmage and applying it to our practices every day so that we can come back stronger in a month’s time for Central Districts!”

The team is currently preparing for the Central District Youth Championship which will be held in OKC on May 7th and 8th. The TYRA team is working hard to earn bids for the National Youth Championship Regatta which will be held in Sarasota, FL starting on June 9th.
